There are many methods that are employed to help insure proper plate placement. Perhaps no technology has had a greater impact than ink jetting truss components with plate size and location.
Ink jetting plate data can help you reduce necessary plate sizes resulting in plate cost reductions. With this being said, ink jetting plate data doesn’t get the job done if the truss builders do not understand and follow the prompts from the info. In the following situations, two issues are illustrated.
In photo 1, plate angulation - location was ignored. Post analysis required this plate removed (along with the stack of matching trusses) and replating.
In photo 2, the improper plate size was used. This is unfortunate, because post analysis indicated insufficient tooth count. These trusses also required rework.
Technologies will not eliminate errors. Rather, it is important to keep in mind that training and inspection are the best approach to quality trusses.
