It’s important to review our standards on a regular basis, so that we can update and improve them over time. Businesses evolve, technology evolves, and so too should our definition of best practices. For wood trusses, our current standard is ANSI/TPI 1–2014 National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the U.S. voluntary standards and conformity assessment system. An American National Standard (ANS) is a voluntary consensus standard that is developed in accordance with the ANSI requirements for due process in a manner that is open to all directly and materially interested parties. By having a national standard, we demonstrate our commitment, as an industry, to maintaining an expected level of quality in our products.

In May, the Truss Plate Institute will officially open the Public Review & Comment period for the draft BSR/TPI 1–2022 (revision to ANSI/TPI 1–2014) National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction. TPI began the process of revising the current ANSI/TPI 1–2014 standard in December of 2019 with the formation of a Project Committee representing a cross-section of the industry. This draft is the culmination of their efforts. The proposed revisions presented in the BSR/TPI 1–2022 draft provide enhancements to ANSI/TPI 1–2014.

Comments will be solicited to ensure that the views of all interested parties have been given full consideration. The draft BSR/TPI 1–2022 establishes minimum requirements for the design and construction of Metal Plate Connected wood trusses. The standard describes the materials used in a truss, both lumber and steel, and design procedures for truss members and joints. Responsibilities, methods for evaluating the metal connector plates, and manufacturing quality assurance are also contained in the standard.

Those wishing to participate in the Public Review of the draft BSR/TPI 1–2022 standard should visit TPI’s website or contact the Truss Plate Institute at (240) 587-5582 for further information. The Public Review period will be open from May 6 to June 20, 2022.

Please join me in this process so that we can ensure our national standard is reflective of the best practices of our industry.
