For most of us, the majority of our time we do things in the way we’ve done them before, for the reasons we’ve had before, and expecting the typical results. For many projects, that’s exactly how to operate! When we follow our habits and procedures, we’re able to capture efficiencies. We increase our speed of completing routine tasks, improve our ability to manage many more tasks simultaneously, and maintain our quality of output. But, every now and then, we’re reminded to reexamine the ordinary and see what else we might be able to conceive and execute.

Re-Imagine a Situation

When I initially saw photos from Deco Truss of exposed trusses on a budget, featured on our cover and in this month’s Design of the Day, my first thought was – great project! Then, learning more about the details, my next thought was – great story!

The designers of the Carnival Cruise Straw Market in Turks and Caicos envisioned heavy timber trusses. Mario Espiñeira, Jr. of  Deco Truss in Miami, Florida readily agreed that heavy timber trusses would look good. But, he added, “Nobody goes to the Straw Market to look at the structure.” Instead of quoting only heavy timber trusses, with the steep price tag to match, Deco Truss also quoted “regular” trusses with a few cosmetic upgrades, including painting the truss plates black. By re-imagining what was possible, the result was a job/sale completed by Deco Truss, a very satisfied customer, and an attractive and sound structure that will be enjoyed by tourists for many years to come.

Visualize a New Perspective

While talking about ingenuity, I also have to mention the Acer ad in this month’s issue which demonstrates the strength of their equipment by suspending a car from it. Way to drive home a point! It reminds me of the classic ads from the early days of trusses, when they were loaded with all kinds of weight, including cars or trucks, to demonstrate their strength. These images do much to reinforce the words that accompany them. Strong visual imagery is eye-catching and educational.

Thinking is Not Wasting Time

So, the next time you feel like you’re in too much of a routine, go ahead and let your mind wander a bit. Get a little creative. Try something new. Ask someone else for their opinion and their input. Look at things from a different perspective.

Whenever you try something new, it may not work out as you’d have expected, but it’s still worth exercising those brain cells. Your next idea may be your most ingenious thought yet!
