Sales-folk are plagued with an addiction to “get the order.” Deep down inside, we want ALL the orders. Unfortunately, for every sales person, there is an opponent who has the same desire...Get ‘em all.

Egotistical human drive opened the door for masters of the art of selling centuries ago with ancient documents such as The Art of War. As commerce grew, these battle tactics were molded into sales strategies.

Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Red Book of Selling instilled the value of making friends of prospective customers. Automobile sales have long let the customer experience the feel of ownership before launching into the full court sales pitch.

The 21st century sales pitch is better than ever at driving home benefits. The primary sales touch point is “feeling better about yourself and confident about the purchase.” Buyers want to “be right” in their decisions.

Throughout centuries, the sales pitch has been refined to hit just the right nerve of the target buyer. One person has the goods. Another wants them. One solution, still an option in our civilized world, is the barbaric method...over power and take it. We see it in governments and businesses and call it a “hostile take-over.”

The more civilized method is to peacefully barter with coercion. The most effective sales method of all times is “risk transference.” Examples are trial periods, money back guarantees, and conditional return policies.

The idea is to get the product in the hands of the consumer and 80% of them will keep it even if they don’t like it or never use it.

The best sales pitch ever hits all the buyer buttons...personal relationship, feel better about self, risk transference, confident decision...the whole checklist.
