I’ve been in the truss business for 42 years, starting out as a Truss Designer and Architectural Draftsman for the family lumber company in Madison, Wisconsin. After relocating to Green Bay in 1986, I spent 10 years with Stock Lumber as Project Engineer and Plant Manager. Then, I left the wood side and joined a light gauge steel truss startup in Atlanta, GA. Missing snow and cold weather though, I accepted the position of President and COO of US Components and moved back up north to New Jersey. There, I started by taking over 3 truss plants, that grew to 16 plants, and eventually the company became one of the 6 operating divisions of ProBuild. As we all know, the downturn in 2008 necessitated many changes including many at ProBuild, so my next destination was 6 years with MiTek as Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Zone 4 and USP Hanger Products division.
So why did I start All Points Technical? The simple answer is because I saw a need and a means to fill that need. In my role at ProBuild, I had overseen 70 truss designers in India, and many of them were interested in returning to business with me as a new design service with significant years of truss design experience. Seeing other groups start up and fail, however, led me first to enroll at Harvard University for a semester, studying Disruptive Strategy to help identify and create a new model and gold standard for offshore design talent.
Today, All Points has staff in 4 countries, providing roof and floor truss design, EWP layout and EWP design, lumber and building material takeoffs, lateral load tie down estimating, and hanger takeoffs. And we have just added All Points 360, which is a department dedicated to kitchen and bath design, drafting, Revit, Cad–home builder plans, structural detailing, and more. For anyone concerned about the accounting side when working with “foreign” companies, we’ve got that covered too. All Points has independently owned corporations in both the USA and Vietnam to easily handle payroll and tax requirements out of the country.
Most importantly for me, I’m also able to continue on this career journey with my wonderful wife, Soung Vo. Not only is she the owner of All Points Technical–Vietnam, she won the title of Ms. World Businesswoman of the Year in 2019. She also brings exceptional business expertise to our company.
As an added bonus, launching All Points Technical allows me to stay engaged with the industry where I’ve being spending most of my life. There’s no business quite like the components industry, and I always enjoyed being involved in WTCA/SBCA too. Some may even remember me from when I served as President of the Wisconsin Chapter (WTMA) and later the Mid Atlantic Chapter (MAWTC).
