Optimize Your Saw with a Lumber Pick Line

Feed the Beast! That’s what I call it — and that’s what I suggest to every component manufacturer striving to optimize their plant. A Lumber PickLine will ensure that your saw never goes hungry for lumber.

Using inefficient, expensive, and labor-intensive “forklift lumber picking” can and should become a thing of the past. Instead, our Lumber PickLine lets you reclaim idle time from your automated saws, and put your employees’ time to better use. The increased output and redistributed labor costs translate to increased production for your plant.

In 2021, I had the pleasure of installing four of our latest systems in Minnesota (two), Vancouver Island, and Edmonton. The photos here show the installation of a 154 ft exterior Lumber PickLine to a hybrid interior 18 ft Live Deck. [For all photos, See PDF or View in Full Issue.]

In this plant, the set-up includes an 8 ft horizontal measure sloping incline to two 7 ft-6 in Smart Conveyors dispensing one board at a time to a MiTek Blade deck with a 3 ft buffer.

Boards are squared up and then dispensed, one board at a time, to the MiTek Blade deck.

In fact with our system, we overlap the Blade deck so that we can dispense one perfectly square to the Blade board with 4” space between boards onto a 40” Blade deck buffer, so the Blade always has one board in the cutting chamber, one board ready to flip, and at least one board “on deck.” No flipper cross ups and the Blade (“The Beast”) just keeps eating.

Monday morning after a weekend Lumber PickLine install, this MiTek Blade is fed lumber continuously to take full advantage of its newly advertised 25% enhanced output. Best of all, it begins with just a small “cubby hole in the wall” to feed the lumber from the exterior PickLine to the saw!

In the yard, the PickLine can span any length needed, and it doesn’t care what brand of lumber you use.

Day and night, you can count on a PickLine to keep your production humming. So when you want to increase production, save time, and save money by eliminating constraints, remember that LimTek and Enventek have researched and developed process organization technology to resolve plant inefficiencies.
